Moving around

2 min read Sources: AAP and CDC guidanceChecked October 2026

The short version

  • Babies crawl, scoot, or shuffle in their own order and time.
  • Babyproof at their level, one room at a time. Skip baby walkers.
  • Call if baby is not moving at all by about 9 months, or uses only one side.

Once your baby starts to move, the whole house looks different, and so does your day. Rolling, scooting, crawling, pulling up: babies get there in their own order and their own time, and some skip steps entirely. Your job is simply to make the space around them safe enough to explore.

What to know

There is a wide normal for moving

Many babies crawl somewhere between 7 and 10 months, and some scoot, roll, or bottom-shuffle instead. How a baby moves matters far less than that they are moving and using both sides of their body. Pulling up to stand usually comes by around 12 months.

Babyproof in stages, at their level

Get down on the floor and look at what your baby can reach. Use gates at stairs, anchor heavy furniture to the wall, cover outlets, and move anything sharp, small, or breakable. You do not need to do the whole house at once: start with the rooms they are in daily.

Make one easy yes-space

A safe area where baby can move freely without hearing no every minute helps both of you. A clear floor, stable furniture, and a basket of safe toys lets them explore and lowers your stress at the same time.

When to call someone

Do not use a baby walker, which the AAP advises against because of falls and burns. Keep stairs gated, heavy furniture anchored, and hot drinks far from edges. Talk to your pediatrician if your baby is not moving at all by around 9 months, is very stiff or very floppy, or seems to use only one side of the body.
