When your child is wired differently

When you're holding everything

The short version

  • Caregiver burnout is common and real. It is not a sign you are doing it wrong.
  • Respite care exists, and many states help pay for it.
  • Hand off whole jobs, not just “help.”

The therapy schedule, the school calls, the insurance appeals, the meltdown in the grocery store, and the sibling who needs you too. Mothers of children with extra needs often carry a load no one else can see, for years rather than weeks. If you are running on empty, it is not because you are doing it wrong. It is because this really is a lot.

What to know

Know the signs of burnout

Tiredness that sleep does not fix, getting sick more, a short fuse, pulling away from friends, or feeling numb or hopeless. It is common among parents of children with disabilities, and it deserves care.

Respite care exists

Respite is short-term care so you can rest. It can come from trained providers, family, or programs. Many states help pay for respite for families of children with disabilities, sometimes through Medicaid waivers. Ask your service coordinator or call 211.

Hand off whole jobs

Instead of “let me know if you can help,” give someone a whole task: the insurance calls, the pharmacy runs, Tuesday pickups. People often want to help and need it made specific.

Siblings need a little of you, too

Brothers and sisters can feel worried, overlooked, or responsible. Short one-on-one time and honest, age-right explanations go a long way. Sibshops are groups made just for them.

Find people a few steps ahead

Parent-to-parent programs match you with a parent who has been where you are. Many say it was the first time they felt understood.

Your health is part of your child's care

Keep your own doctor's appointments and tell your doctor about the stress you carry. Counseling for you is not a luxury.
